Dad recently received the St. X’s first annual Volunteer award for work as president of the St. X Boosters and running the chain gain at football games. It was a special occasion to gather the Barnes clan from the four corners of the continental US (OK…I flew in from CA, Aaron from VA, and Barb/Jimmie drove down from Cincinnati). I actually got to see my Uncle Danny and Aunt Jennifer as well, who seem to always be somewhere else when I’m in Louisville!

We recently lost our cat, Rascal “Peko Train” Barnes. He joined our family right after Nathalie was born and quickly became a key member of our family. We’ll never forget all his crazy antics, such as jumping up on the girls sink every night to drink water from a dixie cup. We’ll miss you Rascal.

Not much, but they do share a love for horse racing. Out here we have Del Mar and the infamous Santa Anita race tracks (of Sea Biscuit fame). This year we rekindled our west coast tradition of throwing a Kentucky Derby Party for friends and neighbors. Unlike the bash three years ago where we packed 120 in tight, this year's party was a bit more civilized. Stacey whipped up her Derby Pie (5 of them to be exact) as well as prepped the Mint Juleps (which I might add where inhaled by the California thankful). My phoned in bet on "Jazil" to Dad and Jerry, who were living the high life at the actual race (along with Aaron), was a loser. Amazingly, Mallory did pick Barbaro and won the kids prize.
