Yesterday we flew back from Cabo, Mexico via Alaska Airlines to Los Angeles. Many thanks to Troy for keeping our car all week and picking us up! We had an incredible time. Both Mallory and Nathalie got some serious sun after spending the entire week in the pool. Before the trip, Mallory wouldn’t put her face under the water, but by mid-week she was fully swimming under water from side to side. We did absolutely nothing on this vacation except lay out by the pool and meet new friends.

Hard to believe this is our 7th year in our little neighborhood and the completion of yet another great cul-de-sac 4th of July. All the infants of 1999 are now becoming big kids, but the moms and dads don’t seem to change with the exception of alchohol tolerance. Old standbys of good food, bouncy houses, and Tom Traylor’s tequila hoof (he doesn’t own the hoof, the hoof owns him – inside joke) were joined by louder speakers (with multiple iPods competing for airtime) and the first organized water fight. Doc Burkhardt treated (or scarred…depending on your point of view) the kids with his 70’s throwback coach’s outfit. All in all, yet another beautiful day in the paradise known as Aliso Viejo.

Cousin John (John O'Bryan IV, that is) has always been a "Barnes" in Irish clothing. From my early days babysitting him to his infamous visits to New York to join in our annual New Year's Eve party, John has always entertained us with his sarcasm and wit. In October 2003 he paid us a visit in Orange County on his way eastward across the US before flying off to travel the world. Nearly two and half years later, Cousin (now "Uncle Cousin John" to Mallory and Nathalie) recently visited us on his drive westward back to Seattle. In between visits, John explored the four corners of the world traveling to Australia, Africa, Middle East, and throughout Asia and Southeast Asia. If you've got a few minutes to absorb some breathtaking pictures of his visit, take a peek at his blog at YieldNot – The Unending Quest for the Fun in Life.

The Tribe Gathers

Dad and Mallory journeyed by sea to Catalina Island for the last "Indian Princesses" event of the 2006 season. After a two hour journey by boat, we landed at Howland's Landing and took our spots in cabin #11. Mallory bunked up top, while Dad and his snoring slept below. We had so much fun telling stories, playing on the beach, and taking hikes.

We recently lost our cat, Rascal “Peko Train” Barnes. He joined our family right after Nathalie was born and quickly became a key member of our family. We’ll never forget all his crazy antics, such as jumping up on the girls sink every night to drink water from a dixie cup. We’ll miss you Rascal.

After three decades at GE, Jerry L. Barnes Sr. (“the REAL Jerry Barnes”) called it a day. No sooner had he retired, he was back in action dealing real estate, serving as President of the St. X boosters, and dishing out predictions for Kentucky high school football on his website of choice, Blue Grass Preps.

This video celebrates the great man, father, and friend that is Jerry L. Barnes Sr!
